Laurie Anderson
Tournament Angler and Lure Customiser
Laurie was born and bred in New Zealand and grew up learning to fish the Tongariro on fly. Since living in Australia, the Yamba area has become the place she knows and loves best to fish. A tournament bass and bream fisher, Laurie has turned her hand to custom painting lures to give her and customers an edge.
Laurie’s Tips For Yamba Bream Fishing
- Laurie emphasizes the versatility of fishing locations in Yamba, highlighting the transition of bream from shallow pontoons and brick walls to deeper waters like Browns Rocks during autumn.
- Focus on the first hour of either side of the tide for optimal fishing, following the tide up or down the system to extend viable fishing times.
- Starting with Pontoons is a good strategy, look for structures with a healthy encrustation and preferably with some rocks, weed or other structure nearby. Locals often feed fish, so identifying pontoons belonging to permanent residents can yield more fish.
- If fish are not feeding on the pontoons it’s time to try the deeper ledges and submerged rock bars that are prevalent throughout the system.
- Low light periods often fish best, as do tide changes. That said, bream can be caught in these system right throughout the day.
- The use of some scent can definitely increase the number of bites, S-Factor is Laurie’s preferred scent.
Laurie’s Bream Fishing Tackle
- Laurie uses a customized Samurai rod (2-6 lbs) paired with a Stradic 1000 reel, preferring 6 lbs braid with a 4 lbs fluorocarbon leader for finesse fishing. For heavier applications, she opts for a TD Black rod (6-12 lbs) with a similar reel setup, emphasizing the need for light gear to effectively fish the Yamba area.
Lures Used by Laurie
- Laurie’s go-to lures include the Cranka Crab in olive or brown for mimicking mud crabs. This can be cast alongside pontoons and other structures and simply allowed to free fall past fish, waiting for a “tick” on the line and then setting the hooks.
- The Eco Gear Prawn in salt and pepper is great for a natural presentation. Laurie like to rig it unweighted on a weedless work hook and cast it in among structure. If it’s not taken on the drop, it can often be taken off the bottom at the first twitch when you begin to retrieve the lure
- The Pro Lure Clone Prawn is a great option in the smallest size. Throw it into rock walls and hang on!
