Dan’s North Coast NSW Snapper Fishing Tips

  • Dan underscores the importance of timing, especially targeting the first hour of morning light for prime snapper fishing. This is crucial as snapper behaviour is highly influenced by light conditions during specific periods.
  • Focus on areas with shallow reef systems, pinnacles, and bait schools. These locations often house active snapper, making them ideal spots for fishing success.
  • Fishing after a low-pressure system and during darker moon phases increases the chances of a successful catch. These atmospheric conditions tend to activate snapper feeding patterns.
  • A drop-style fishing technique is the most effective. By letting the lure naturally sink and waft without much manipulation, Dan mimics the natural movement of prey, enticing snapper to strike.

Dan’s Snapper Fishing Tackle

  • Light Outfit Preference: For prolonged casting and reduced fatigue, Dan recommends a lightweight outfit. He specifically favours Tackle Tactics 7’ Black Mamba and Red Belly rods in 3-6 kilos or 4-8 kilos categories, coupled with an Okuma ITX 2500 reel.
  • Long casting is important for this style of fishing and Dan opts for the lightest braid he can get away with. 12-pound Tidal Force braid with a 20-pound leader allows the leader to break before the main line if a snapper runs into reefs, preserving the mainline.

Dan’s Selection Of Snapper Fishing Lures

  • Dan has a strong preference for Z Man lures, particularly the 5-inch and 7-inch jerk shads. These lures, in conjunction with 3/8oz TT jig heads, have proven deadly for his style of fishing.
  • An advantage of Z Man lures is their durability. They can withstand prolonged use without needing frequent replacements. Preferred colours include pink and white, blue and white, and grey and white, which emulate natural baitfish colours.
