Ryan Stimson Fishing

Ryan Stimson

Gladstone Sponsored Angler

Over the couple of years Ryan has become single-minded and laser focussed on targeting tripletail around his home town of Gladstone a bit of a mission. He’s dedicated a ton of time and burned a lot of fuel figuring out where they’ll be, how the tides affect their movement and how to get them to take a well presented lure. In this episode of the ALF podcast he shares plenty of his learnings and helps get others on track for success on the elusive tripletail..

  • Location and Preparation: Ryan primarily fishes for tripletail inshore, focusing on areas where floating debris accumulates, such as current lines near bays, coastlines, and mangrove fringes. He spends time zigzagging across these areas, marking current lines where tripletail are likely to congregate.
  • Spotting Tripletail: Tripletail are often found near debris like logs, sticks, seaweed, and foam. Ryan looks for white foam that stands out against other debris, indicating potential fish presence. He also observes for any movement or discolored water that might indicate tripletail.
  • Tackle and Techniques: Ryan uses light tackle, typically a 20lb setup with a 2500 reel and 25lb leader. He favors lures like unweighted gulp shrimp, paddle tails, and swim crabs. These are cast ahead of the fish and retrieved steadily to entice strikes. When tripletail are not responsive to one lure, he switches to another until he finds what works.
  • Lure Selection and Presentation: The choice of lure depends on conditions and fish behavior. Gulp shrimp, paddle tails, and swim crabs are effective choices. Ryan emphasizes casting ahead of the fish and retrieving the lure steadily towards their nose. Keeping the lure visible and offering different options can increase success.
  • Other Tips: Ryan advises anglers to be observant of fish behavior and adjust tactics accordingly. Tripletail can be forgiving with noise but are sensitive to being directly cast upon. Persistence and variety in lure selection are key to success.
  • Stomach Contents: Ryan shares an anecdote about finding baby seahorses in the stomach of a tripletail, highlighting the diverse range of prey items they consume.
