Yellowtail Kingfish Fishing Episodes

The Five Best Fishing Spots In Sydney With Luke Kay

The greater Sydney area has no shortage of fishing opportunities for lure tossers, as today’s guest Luke Kay shares in this interview. From the bays and estuaries to the ocean rocks, Luke takes us through where he likes to go in search of fish.

  • Kingfish are a popular gamefish found in the waters around Australia’s southern coast.
  • Fishing varies from estuaries and bays to land-based rock fishing, inshore reefs and deep water jigging.
  • Lures used for catching kingfish vary dramatically due to different habitats and water depths kingfish frequent.
  • Kingfish are nearly always associated with hard structure such as reefs, wrecks, pylons and moorings. They are fast, powerful and dirty fighters that require robust tackle to catch.
  • Catching can be frustrating at times. Often they’ll follow a lure but not take it and on other days they’ll smash any lure that comes within range.
  • Yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) is a highly migratory carnivorous species found in the coastal waters of southern Australia, from Western Australia to New South Wales.

  • They feed on a variety of prey, such as small fish, squid, and crustaceans, and are opportunistic feeders that take advantage of any available food source.

  • Yellowtail kingfish are known to form schools, ranging from a few individuals to several hundred fish, and migrate seasonally between offshore and inshore waters in response to prey availability.

  • In the wild, yellowtail kingfish can live up to 20 years and grow up to 2 meters in length. Males typically reach sexual maturity earlier than females, at around 4-5 years of age.

  • They can be caught in depths from less than 2m to over 100m.
  • Surface lures such as poppers and stickbaits that effectively mimic the action of fleeing baitfish can attract kingfish to strike.
  • Sinking stickbaits can be effective for catching kingfish when they are less active on the water surface.
  • Mechanical jigging is another popular technique, especially when catching kingfish around structure such as reefs or wrecks.
  • Soft plastics that imitate baitfish or squid and can be rigged weedless or on a jighead and worked through the water column.
  • High speed metal lures can be allowed to sink and then cranked back at full speed to encourage kingies to give chase.
